If you're here, there's a good chance you already understand something that's hard to explain to people who have never really loved an animal. So we'll skip the sales pitch and just tell you who we are.

Our story

The Drive Home

There's a moment every pet parent knows by heart.

You're sitting in the car with the paperwork signed and the folder on the passenger seat, and there is an animal in the back who has no idea yet that everything is about to get better.

Ours wouldn't come to the front of the kennel. Not for treats, not for a soft voice, not for anything. The volunteer crouched down next to us and said, “She's a good girl. She's just done hoping.”

That was the quietest drive home of our lives.

It took weeks before she slept stretched out on her side instead of curled up, ready to run. It took a lot longer before she brought us a toy — tail going, ears up, the whole works.

That toy came apart in her mouth before the day was over.

We stood in the kitchen holding a torn seam and a handful of stuffing, and we were angry. Not about the money. About the fact that somebody made that thing for a dog like her and didn't seem to care whether it lasted.

That was the day Petmiva started.

And then there were two

Then Came the One With the Crooked Ear

A year later we said the words “we're just fostering.” Everyone reading this already knows how that ended.

He arrived with a crooked ear, a deeply suspicious personality, and zero interest in us for weeks. Today he sleeps on whatever laundry is warmest and complains loudly if a single closet door is closed.

He's also the reason Petmiva isn't a dog store.

Cats get treated like an afterthought — a smaller shelf, a cheaper version, a dog toy in a different color. Anyone who actually lives with a cat knows they aren't small dogs. They hunt. They solve things. They need to work for the win. So we built the cat side of this store with the same care as the dog side, not as a leftover.

Two front doors. One house. Neither one gets the scraps.

We know who we're talking to

  • You have hundreds of photos of them on your phone and no intention of deleting a single one.
  • You celebrate birthdays. Maybe a gotcha day too.
  • You've changed plans because somebody wasn't quite themselves that day.
  • You talk to them like they understand every word — and you're not entirely convinced they don't.
  • You bought them a very nice bed. They sleep in yours.
  • You'll spend twenty minutes choosing something for them and ninety seconds choosing something for yourself.

We're not judging. We do all of it.

Some of you found yours at a shelter. Some through a breeder. Some rescued one who badly needed it. And some of you never chose at all — they simply turned up at exactly the right moment and never left. However they found you, they became yours, and you became theirs. That's the only part that matters to us.

What we stand for

Four Rules We Don't Break

We're not trying to sell you everything. We're trying to make the ordinary days a little better — a calmer car ride, an easier walk, a cleaner floor, a happier hour of play, a longer nap on the couch. Those moments sound small. If you share your life with an animal, you know they aren't.

Chosen the way we'd choose for ours

Every product passes one filter before it goes on this site: would we bring this home for our own dog and our own cat? If the answer is no, it doesn't get listed. That's the entire rule.

Safe comes before cute

We look at what a thing is made of, how it's put together, and whether it comes in a size that actually fits, before we look at how good it photographs. Cute is easy. The rest takes work.

Dogs and cats, equally

Not a dog store with a cat aisle. Two full collections, chosen separately, because a cat's idea of a good day looks nothing like a dog's.

Small enough to still care

There's no call center here and no ticket number. When you write to us, you reach the same small team that chooses what goes in this store.

We can't repay that. Nobody can. But we can spend our days looking for the things that make their days better — and that feels like a decent way to say thank you.
